Mini Split Installation Cost by Number of Zones

The first zone carries the outdoor unit and most of the labor. Every zone after that is comparatively cheap — until you cross the multi-head threshold.

Mini split pricing is not linear, and understanding why saves people from either over-buying or splitting a project into two expensive phases.

Price by configuration

• 1 zone: $3,800 – $6,500
• 2 zones: $6,500 – $10,500
• 3 zones: $8,500 – $14,000
• 4 zones: $11,000 – $18,000
• 5+ zones: $14,000 – $24,000

Why zone one is the expensive one

The first zone pays for the outdoor condenser, the electrical circuit, the disconnect, the pad or bracket, permits and the crew’s mobilization. Adding a second head to an existing multi-port condenser means one more line set, one more wall penetration and roughly half a day of labor.

The multi-zone efficiency trap

Multi-head systems share one compressor. When only one head is calling, the compressor still has to run at a minimum speed sized for the whole system, which drives it into inefficient short cycling. Two separate single-zone systems often outperform one four-zone system on both efficiency and reliability, at similar total cost. Ask your contractor to price both.

Line set length matters more than people expect

Most manufacturers allow 50–100 feet of total line set, with a maximum height difference between units. Every foot beyond the pre-charged length requires additional refrigerant and reduces capacity. If your outdoor unit has to sit far from the heads, that constraint may dictate the whole system layout.

Where to spend and where not to

Spend on the outdoor unit’s cold-climate rating and on proper line set installation. Save on head styles — a standard wall-mount unit performs identically to a designer flat panel that costs $900 more.
