Why this site exists
Most heat pump information online is written by someone who wants to sell you a heat pump. Manufacturer pages describe features. Contractor blogs describe why you should call them today. Neither answers the question a homeowner actually has, which is usually some version of “is this the right thing for my house, and what will it really cost me?”
HeatPumpWise exists to answer that question with numbers, trade-offs and the parts nobody volunteers.
Who writes this
One person: Jaime Jorques Moratalla. I built this site and I write everything on it.
Let me be direct about what that means, because it matters more here than on most sites. I am not an HVAC technician and I do not hold a trade licence. I am an independent researcher. What I do is read the primary sources — manufacturer installation manuals, published capacity tables, the AHRI certified product directory, ENERGY STAR criteria, IRS and state programme documentation — and turn them into something a homeowner can act on.
That is a real service, and it is also a real limit. I will tell you what a fault code family points to and which checks are safe to do yourself. I will not pretend that reading service literature is the same as standing in front of your system with a gauge set.
How I work
- No commercial interest in your decision. I do not sell, install or service equipment. No manufacturer pays for coverage, placement or favourable language. There are no affiliate links on this site.
- Every claim traceable. Each article ends with the primary sources it draws on, linked directly. If you want to check a number, the path is right there.
- Ranges, not invented averages. Cost figures are published ranges with the reasoning shown, because a single national average blends a garage mini split with a whole-home replacement and describes neither.
- Limits stated, not hidden. Anything involving refrigerant is legally restricted to an EPA Section 608 certified technician. Sealed systems, capacitors and line-voltage wiring are flagged as technician work rather than left ambiguous.
- When I do not know, I say so instead of guessing.
What this site is not
It is not a substitute for a licensed professional looking at your actual system. No article here can size your equipment, diagnose your fault or tell you whether a quote is fair without seeing your house. What it can do is give you the questions to ask, the numbers to compare against, and enough understanding to tell a careful contractor from a careless one.
